International Mobility

At Northumbria University we offer both opportunities for our students to study abroad as part of their degree, and we welcome students from partner institutions who want to study with us in Newcastle. We're also working to open up similar opportunities for staff.

Outgoing: study abroad from Northumbria

For some students, the opportunity to study their subject in a different academic environment is key. For others, it's the chance to live in another culture and build friendships with people from around the world. Either way, we offer exciting opportunities to study and live in countries including Japan, Australia, France and the USA.

Over 200 Northumbria students study abroad each academic year. Most students go for one semester or a full academic year, gaining unforgettable experiences, memories and personal contacts that last well beyond graduation.

Almost every undergraduate programme has a 4-year variant with the option to study abroad in the third year. International Short Programmes are open to all students who want to spend 2 to 8 weeks abroad over the summer.

Incoming: study at Northumbria

If you're a student at one of our partner institutions, we'd love to welcome you to Newcastle. Incoming exchange students can follow a credit-based programme with us for one or two semesters, studying alongside our own students and experiencing life in one of the UK's best student cities.

Staff mobility

Northumbria has applied to join the Erasmus+ programme, which would allow staff to teach, train or collaborate at partner institutions abroad, and welcome incoming colleagues to Northumbria in turn. We expect to know the outcome of our Charter application by September 2026, with a call for funding applications opening in November 2026 for activity to take place in 2027/28.
